Hyperventilation can occur unconsciously (for example, due to excitement or physical exertion) or consciously (through repeated deep inhalation and exhalation). In the early stages, hyperventilation can be brought back under control through conscious breathing. If this is not successful, it can lead to dizziness and loss of consciousness.
